Aujourd'hui, la Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS) est la seule édition critique complète de la Bible hébraïque, présentant toutes les variantes textuelles importantes et les corrections suggérées en notes de bas de page. Elle succède à la Biblia Hebraica éditée par Rudolf Kittel. Contrairement aux éditions critiques du Nouveau Testament grec, la BHS n'a pas pour objectif de reconstruire le texte original de la Bible hébraïque. Cela serait impossible avec les manuscrits disponibles, les plus anciens témoignages textuels directs étant les manuscrits découverts à partir de 1949 dans le désert de Judée, dans les grottes de Qumrân près de la mer Morte. À l’exception d'une seule transcription complète du Livre d'Isaïe, les textes bibliques de Qumrân consistent exclusivement en fragments, souvent composés de quelques mots consécutifs ou de lettres isolées.
